Effect of mesa geometry on low-terahertz frequency range plasmons in two-dimensional electron systems

Abstract We demonstrate engineering of the low-terahertz range plasmonic spectra two-dimensional electron systems by modifying their geometry. Specifically, we have modelled, fabricated, and measured two devices for comparison. The first device has a rectangular channel, while second is trapezoidal, designed to support richer spectrum causing variation in width along direction plasmon propagation. show that resonant frequencies field distributions can largely be described simple one-dimensional analytical model, modelled trapezoidal shows more complex pattern with significant length so requiring treatment. results illustrate potential channel geometry obtain different experiments, applications design novel terahertz-range devices, such as plasmon-based sources detectors.
